World Milk Day

World Milk Day is an opportunity to recognize the importance of milk to global nutrition, as well as the contributions the dairy industry makes to create a sustainable future.

As a century-old, farmer- and retailer-owned cooperative, June 1 is an important day at Land O’Lakes. World Milk Day is an opportunity to recognize the importance of milk to global nutrition, as well as the contributions the dairy industry makes to create a sustainable future.

Here’s a snapshot of a few of our dairy sustainability efforts underway right now:

Seventh-generation dairy farmers and dairy members Caleb and Alice Crothers are working to reduce waste at their 130-cow operation while stewarding their northern Maryland farmland for their children and generations to come. Watch them further discuss their work:

Venture37—a non-profit founded by Land O’Lakes—is providing farmers with technology and techniques with tools to become more sustainable. Listen to Renny Chemtai, an Animal Nutritionist working in Kenya, explain how she’s helping reduce methane gas emissions from cows by helping dairy farmers change the feed they use.

Land O’Lakes dairy member Joey Airoso is a fourth-generation farmer in Tulare, California. Sustainability is integral to his operation and includes adopting new technology for his family’s farm.

In 2021, Land O’Lakes also launched its our Dairy 2025 Commitment to help its 1,600 member-owners reduce their individual environmental footprint. Since the program’s launch last year, nearly 70% of Land O’Lakes’ milk supply has completed the initial assessment.

By standing together as a cooperative of retailer owners, local cooperatives and farmers, Land O’Lakes will keep working to create a sustainable future today—on World Milk Day—and all year round.
