Dairy 2025: A sustainability commitment for farmers

New sustainability commitments will keep Land O’Lakes’ farmer-members on the leading edge

What will the world look like in the year 2025? Already, many food and retail companies have made bold commitments to reduce their carbon footprint in years that come.

The next generation of consumers are demanding industries create more sustainable solutions and stay on the cutting edge of sustainability. For many of these, success is dependent on strong partnerships and seamless collaboration tracing all the way back to the farm.

Land O’Lakes, Inc. member-owners have always been committed to environmental stewardship and animal care and we’re proud to be taking the next step in that journey. Our Dairy 2025 Commitment calls for us to work with all of our more than 1,600 member dairy farms to complete an industry-leading on-farm sustainability assessment aligned with the U.S. Dairy Stewardship Commitment while maintaining universal compliance with the National Milk Producers Federation’s National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) program.
Each farm will have measured more than 250 points of data on fuel, electricity and water use; land and manure management; and additional elements that contribute to a healthier plot of land and climate. Using this data, Land O’Lakes will design more opportunities for farmer-members to improve on-farm efficiency and further reduce their environmental footprint.
To farmers, sustainability is all about reducing waste while stewarding the land for many generations to come. Our member-owners and our enterprise have long been on the forefront of agricultural sustainability. In 2016, Land O’Lakes launched its Truterra business to help farmers identify positive environmental practices and measure their outcomes. The Dairy 2025 Commitment is our next step in helping our dairy farmer members quantify their environmental footprint and identify ways to reduce it in an economically viable way.

Building a brighter tomorrow, together

In addition to making this commitment to ourselves, we recognize that global impact means teaming up with other leading organizations. We are working with customers including  Bel Brands and The Hershey Company on projects that drive results in sustainability, including increasing the use of cover crops and other sustainable agricultural practices, reducing GHG emissions and helping improve water quality in the Chesapeake Bay and other watersheds.
Earlier this year, we announced our TruCarbon™ Program that represents the first and only farmer-owned carbon program in the U.S. that is designed to provide both the best experience for farmers and their ag retail partners and the highest quality credits for private-sector buyers, like our first secured buyer, Microsoft.
We are hopeful for a world in which more people care about where their food comes from, and we want you to know about the many ways our member-owners are working to ensure a more sustainable future for food and agriculture.
