Land O’Lakes is continually seeking cross-sector support to shed light and find solutions to the lack of broadband access impacting rural communities across the country. As we’ve worked to bring attention to this issue, one challenge we’ve run into relates to the inaccurate connectivity maps currently used by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
To help address this, we’ve signed on as an offical sponsor with the National Association of Counties (NACo), on the deployment of its “TestIT” mobile app designed to identify areas with low or no connectivity. Gaining a more accurate picture of connectivity is critical to ensure that limited federal funding for broadband infrastructure is provided to the locations that need it most.
How does it work?
Per the NACo website, “TestIT” is an iOS/Android mobile app that leverages a broadband sampling tool designed by Measurement Lab (MLab) to aggregate broadband speeds across the country from app users. With the press of a single button, users will be able to test their broadband speed from anywhere.
Additionally, users will be able to compare their internet speeds to the national average and minimum standards established by the FCC. No personal information will be collected through this mobile app.
Download the app from the IOS/Android app store to your phone
Open TestIT and click “Test Your Speed Here!”
Our cooperative system provides a unique opportunity to spread the word and help crowdsource this valuable connectivity data. Help us today by testing your connectivity and encouraging others to do the same.
