Philippines Team puts ICE on MILK
1/20/2012 12:00 AM

As part of the ongoing USDA-funded Food for Progress program in the Philippines, Land O' Lakes International Development held a series of informational campaigns and educational sessions on the importance of milk. The campaign, called ICE on MILK, was held in various districts in Cagayan de Oro City, Mindanao region, from July to October 2011.

The goal of ICE on MILK was to increase milk consumption, especially among women and children. The per capita guidance on milk consumption is 32 liters per year, according to the 2008 national nutrition survey conducted by the Food Nutrition and Research Institute. However, Philippines' per capita milk consumption has decreased from 19 to 16 kgs, which has contributed to malnutrition. More than 100 women participated in the livelihoods training program on adding value to fresh milk, by making white cheese, lacto-flan and pastillas de leche during the Dairy Forum at the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines - East Asia Growth Area Trade Expo. The event was broadcast over the largest TV and radio network in Mindanao through October 19.
